Back to Basics: Minding the Gap & Empowering Yourself in the New Year
Remembering you can always enjoy your life and make the changes you seek!
A lot of people start working with me when they’re peering into the gap. The gap being the space between how they’re currently living and how they want to live. It might be their personal life or their professional life, but usually it’s a blend of both. They really want to close the gap but don’t know where to start. Instead, they’ve been doggy paddling round and round, taking mismatched actions, chancing on random opportunities, and generally feeling spread thin without a clear roadmap to guide them. It’s exhausting and defeating, and they want more than anything to close the gap and get on with life.
The good news is you can always close the gap. Doing so doesn’t have anything to do with attempting to gratitude your way into complacency; forcing yourself to live only in the “now” and be grateful for what you have while wishing for better days ahead. There’s nothing worse, I think, than feeling shamed into being content with what you have even if you want something else. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth that you hide from others because you don’t want to appear ungrateful, even when you know the gap exists and there’s more out there for you.
There’s no question you can make your closely held visions, the ones that exist on the other side of the gap, become your reality if you’re willing to put in the effort. This is the work I love to do with people. As they harness their own power, and take fresh, intentional action toward what they seek, they always move from the reality they’ve been living into the one they envision.
These shifts don’t necessarily appear dramatic from the outside, but they’re transformative for each individual. For some people closing the gap is simply about making small tweaks to help them live with greater joy and ease. For others, it’s about deeper shifts that truly transform every aspect of their lives. It doesn’t matter where you’re starting or how wide you consider your gap to be. If you want to close it you can, it’s simply a matter of starting where you are and writing the new narrative from there.
I hope everyone is having a good start to 2024. Please remember, if you’re staring into a gap right now, wondering how to close it, there are plenty of ways to do so. It starts with articulating your closely held values and staying true to them, then setting your vision, and mapping out a path you take towards it. Along your journey there’ll be miracle moments, difficult tasks, and plenty of excitement; all of which are productive and integral parts of the experience. Then, when you find yourself at the other side, you’ll have enjoyed the unfolding and be living with the ease and joy you once never imagined possible.
Be clear and unapologetic about what you seek in life. Your dreams are yours to hold. Enjoy your life along the way, approach your days with wonder, and start living the personal empowerment narrative that’s yours to write. Trust yourself.
