Did you see that Ina Garten announced her new memoir?! I’ve already pre-ordered it and will be excitedly adding it to my collection of food memoirs and Ina Garten titles. I’ve always loved her books and am thrilled she’s chosen to share more of her personal story.
I love it when people who’ve experienced success in the public eye share their journeys, there’s always something we can take away from their lessons. Plus, I’m a big believer in studying the people who inspire us, and we consider role models. It reminds us what is possible for ourselves and others.
It appears that her memoir will center on the concept first articulated by Seneca the Younger, and many people since. It’s about the notion of taking forward action toward your dreams so you’re ready to take advantage of whatever stroke of luck the Universe sends your way. I truly believe in this approach and teach it to my clients all the time.
If you want to something to happen in your life you’ve got the go after it, you’ve got to lay the groundwork for your vision, you’ve got to take action toward the outcome you seek one day at a time. Also, as you do these things, you’ve got to leave room for the magic to appear and be prepared to harness it when it does.
Back when I was a food write (never at the level of Ina Garten, obviously!) I appeared on a lot of local television shows. I did sooo many rounds of television, schlepping ingredients and finished products to television stations all around the country. Even thought it was very tiring, it was worthwhile because one day a producer from the Today Show invited me to be on the show. I was caught off guard, and so beyond excited, I couldn’t believe my luck.
I had definitely had enough practice. I knew I could be on television and was fully prepared for a national program. It was one of those moments when an opportunity had appeared out-of-the-blue, and I was ready.
I had a lot of lucky moments during my time as a food writer and am grateful for them because it enables me to teach this concept with confidence. There are many more examples in my vault I’ll save for another day!
So, yes, listen to Ina (and Seneca, and me!), the luck really does appear when you’re ready for it. Take the time to prepare! Dive into your passions, your hobbies, whatever it is that you’re working toward. The luck will appear, often when you least expect it, and you’ll be so, so glad you’re ready.
Have a great week!
